The Formentor spirit: timeless style and culture

Formentor was the dream of Adan Diehl, an Argentinian millionaire who fell in love with the area and turned it into a haven for artists from the four corners of the world. Since then, Formentor has been a place of inspiration for poets, painters, writers and artists from all around the world.

A dream which was then taken up by the Buadas family who set up the Formentor Prize, a literary award that went on to become one of the most important in Europe...

The same dream that has been shared by the Barceló family ever since the hotel became part of the chain in 2006: "We are going to continue this marvellous project of maintaining Formentor and its legacy, but we are also going to take it forward into the future, towards the society of today and the challenges of tomorrow". Simón Pedro Barceló – President of Grupo Barceló.

The “Formentor Literary Conversations” were revived in 2008 and in 2011, the “Formentor Literary Prize” which was awarded that year to the Mexican author Carlos Fuentes. Juan Goytisolo received it in 2012, Javier Marías in 2013, and the 2014 prize has been awarded to Enrique Vila Matas.

Formentor Sunset Classics is a new cultural protect that was born in 2013, an open-air music festival beside the sea, in a unique setting. A project that is determined to become a benchmark in the Mediterranean, and which is graced by the participation of leading figures from the international music scene. An event that serves to reconfirm the enthusiasm and the commitment of Grupo Barceló to Formentor and to culture.
