One of Spain’s most acclaimed violinists
A high-profile violin moved the audience in Formentor
This 3rd edition will be remembered for the moving violin and piano recital by two increasingly high-profile artists in what was another bold decision by Barceló Formentor to combine maturity and youth in classical music. Ana María Valderrama, acknowledged as one of Spain’s best violinists and accompanied by pianist Luis del Valle, interpreted works by Schumann, Saint-Saëns, Sarasate, Dubois and Chopin.
Both artists were immensely grateful for having been given the opportunity to participate in this initiative by Grupo Barceló, in conjunction with the Fundación Albéniz and the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía (the alma mater of both musicians and where they met before becoming a happily married couple). Valderrama said, "it is an honour to play in festivals with top-class artists such as Maestro Daniel Barenboim, or Dame Kiri Te Kanawa", and "…initiatives such as the ones that this hotel organises are essential for us, particularly in the social situation in which we find ourselves ".
The actual recital took place at sunset in the exclusive gardens of the Barceló Formentor Hotel. The audience was able to enjoy a passionate performance from both artists and the inspiring relationship between the two instruments. They seemed so intertwined, they appeared to “touch the essence and the heart of the music”, to use the words of Luis del Valle before the concert, when he was describing what they seek and what motivates them when they play together.
The new stage, especially designed for these new encounters with talented young musicians, seats somewhat fewer people and has a more intimate design. In an idyllic setting beside the Mediterranean Sea, it undoubtedly managed to connect the public to the music right from the outset.
A brilliant performance that has allowed the Formentor Sunset Classics, to combine, the first time, a programme that features both established musicians and major new promises.
