Russian Epic interpreted by Mikhail Tatarnikov

The principal Director of St. Petersburg's prestigious Mikhailovsky Theatre, Maestro Mikhail Tatarnikov, considered to be one of the leading figures in Russian classical music, inaugurated the Formentor Sunset Classics cultural project with a concert entitled The Russian Epic. This event took place on June 22nd 2013 in the gardens of the hotel, with the Mediterranean sea providing an exceptional backdrop.

During the press conference, Tatarnikov admitted that interpreting Alexander Nevsky "was something highly significant" for him, on account of the impact that this movie had on him as a child in the former Soviet Union. "Even before I began to study music I already knew both the movie and the music of Prokofiev really well", he added.

A total of 80 musicians were on stage for this performance, including the mezzo-soprano Irina Shishkova, the Orquestra Simfònica de les Illes Balears "Ciutat de Palma" and the Cor de la Generalitat Valenciana, directed by Larisa Gergieva.

The film "Alexander Nevsky" by Pier Alli was screened, and the soundtrack, which was composed by Sergei Prokofiev, was conducted and interpreted by Maestro Mikhail Tatarnikov.

The concert lasted an hour, and featured two different parts. It began with a performance of Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" and then, following a brief interlude, the evening's main attraction, the soundtrack that Prokofiev composed for the film "Alexander Nevsky"

That this first edition proved to be a memorable occasion can be seen from the headlines of the reviews that appeared in the press in the days following the event: "An unforgettable event in the gardens of the Barceló Formentor Hotel" Fuera de Serie; "A splendid homage to Classical Russia" Expansión, "Fantastic, almost idyllic" RNE; "An incomparable setting" COPE; "A unique concert" Diario de Mallorca, and "Reviving the cultural dream" El Mundo.
